Travel Baseball umpires: Do you find that you are losing more money than you make?
I recently applied for my umping license so I can umpire youth travel baseball in the spring and summer. I just had my first class a week ago, and the instructor keeps saying that I must be in this for baseball (which I am) but if I think I’m going to make money out of this, then I’m crazy. He said that umps always loose more money then they spend due to:
1. re-applying
2. buying new equipment
3. traveling
Travel baseball pays $45 a game. Do you umps feel that financial income of umpires can be a little deceiving???
im an umpire for non travel baseball and make minimum wage (7.40 for my state) and YES we (all umpires, travel and not) are way underpaid. It’s a tougher job than it looks and im right there with you.
